Tooth whitening is one of the most popular dental procedures, for its immediate result and for the convenience of being done in a single visit to the practice, or at home.
In the practice, whitening is done by applying 40% hydrogen peroxide to the tooth surface and using an LED lamp to speed the process up. A protective mask is placed around the gums, the peroxide is applied 2–3 times, and a fluoride gel is applied afterwards to protect the teeth. The whole procedure takes about 1–1.5 hours, after which a special 3-day diet is needed to hold the result.
Whitening at home uses hydrogen or carbamide peroxide in lower concentrations, in a tray made at the practice from impressions of your teeth. It runs over a few days, usually 7–10, followed by the same diet.
How long the effect lasts depends on diet and hygiene: frequent coffee, tea or red wine, and smoking, all contribute to teeth discolouring again.
