Endodontic treatment means removing the contents of the tooth root canal, known in everyday speech as a root canal. Patients come to us with strong, persistent pain that does not pass or responds poorly to painkillers, with a feeling of pulsing, or with pain that wakes them at night. The treatment removes the contents with special instruments and applies medication, and is finished in at most 3 visits. The aim is to clear the infection, put the tooth back into function and avoid extraction.
Root canal treatment
When the nerve is inflamed or the tooth is infected, we clear the canal and put the tooth back into use. The aim is to keep the tooth, not to remove it.
From the first call to the follow-up
Examination and X-ray
A targeted X-ray shows how many canals there are and the state of the root tip.
Opening and cleaning
Under anaesthetic we remove the contents of the canals with special instruments and irrigate them.
Medication and filling
The canals may be left with medication, then permanently filled and sealed.
Restoring the crown
A tooth without a nerve is more brittle, so it is usually built up and covered with a crown.
The questions we are asked most
If your question is not here, call us — we answer by phone too.

One to three in most cases. Where there is a marked infection or a change at the root tip, the canals are left with medication and one more visit is needed.
On back teeth, almost always — a tooth without a nerve loses moisture and cracks more easily under chewing. On front teeth, if little tissue was lost, a good filling is enough.
It can. If trouble returns years later, the canals can be reopened, cleaned and refilled. That is always the better option than extraction, as long as the root is sound.
The infection does not settle on its own. It spreads towards the root tip and into the bone, and that usually ends in extraction, then a replacement with an implant or a bridge — which takes longer and costs more.
